Registered Psychologist · College of Alberta Psychologists
I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists. I have worked with children, youth and families since 1981 in various settings and have a strong passion for helping others to live their best lives. I believe that it takes tremendous courage to seek support in life and value the trust that my clients place in me when they share their personal struggles. I have worked with clients of different cultures, abilities and ages, and have a passion for working with people who have experienced trauma and grief.
My name is Mauren Tanyi-Njockobi. I have a Master's degree in Social Work. I am registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers. Being a social worker in advanced clinical practice since 2012, I have built a philosophy that relationship is the foundation to healing, thus anything else comes after. To build a healthy therapeutic relationship, clients must feel safe. The foundation of safety lies in good listening skills, showing empathy, validation, and being present and non-judgmental. Being a person of colour, I have learned to appreciate other cultures just from being respectful while maintaining healthy boundaries with clients. I have worked with people from diverse cultural backgrounds; this has helped me to equip myself with knowledge and skills in culturally competent practice. I have fourteen years of clinical experience with children, youth, and adults. I have worked with people struggling with a variety of emotional, social, psychological, and physical health problems. This includes but is not limited to trauma, anxiety, relationship issues, divorce, ADHD/ADD, ODD, parent child relationship issues, bipolar, anger management, behavioral issues, communication difficulties, decision making, loss and grief, workplace conflict, racism, and self-esteem/image. I am trained and have used a variety of therapeutic approaches in my practice including play therapy, CBT, DBT, EFT, theraplay, polyvagal system approaches, and solution focused therapy. Each person is different so there is no one size fits all approach to helping. My belief is that everyone has potentials and abilities, which is why a client centered approach is my go-to. This approach encourages a collaborative process with goal setting and tailoring interventions based on clients' specific needs. I start to hold hands wherever clients are on their journey toward healing. I walk with them through their path while utilizing their internal resources to support them to realize their true potential.
